Our Scheduled Workshop Retreats are designed for individualized attention.
All programs are limited to 4 - 8 persons.
Due to the remoteness of Whispering Springs Haven, we recommend you purchase our Food Package which includes 3 daily nutritional meals. You are welcome to bring a small selection of your favorites. Special diets will be accommodated as closely as possible. All are welcome to share in food preparation.
All Workshop Retreats and Private Rentals Include an Orientation Program and Guided Nature Tour
For your pleasure, safety and the welfare of our wildlife refuge, an overview of our House Rules, Land Boundaries, Wellness and Nature Studies Services are discussed the first night of arrival; followed by an educational Guided Nature Tour of our songbird habitats, trails and creeks the following morning.

July 17 - 22 Full Buck Moon Arts Retreat
Honoring Native American Ancestry and Culture
During a full moon, the landscape of Whispering Springs is bathed in a healing blue white light that penetrates the spirit. In addition to the fine arts and craft workshops noted below, attendees will have the option to participate in daily meditations, yoga, storytelling, song, drumming or healing circles - as well as to enjoy wellness services with certified practicioners to include arometherapy spa bath, therapeutic massage, medicinal herbal remedies, and alternative healing such as Ami Deus and Reiki.

The Figure: Drawing in Charcoal and Pastel from a Live Modell
For beginners as well as serious enthusiasts with extended art backgrounds. This workshop will build on
the process begun in beginning drawing. Through study and practice students will explore structural, expressive and compositional solutions to challenges present in the human figure. Exercises will include measurement and proportion; working with shape rather than line; basic skeletal and muscular anatomy. Five days live model. In addition to live drawing studio sessions, library study and discussions of the masters will be enjoyed.

This is a class that welcomes both beginners or those with a working knowledge of glass. There will be several projects that you will be able to choose from and complete, either for gifts or for yourself. All tools and supplies are provided. Drawing and Photography Retreat: Studies of Autumn Light, Depth and Color
During this time, Central West Virginia is washed in the vibrant colors of fall. Attendees have the option to stay through the weekend or may choose an extended stay to fully enjoy Whispering Springs Haven's autumn splendor.

For beginners as well as serious enthusiasts with extended art backgrounds. This workshop will explore landscape composition in various mediums, styles and mood using colored pencils and pastels. Exercises will include composition, techniques to achieve texture and depth, mixing color and mediums, working with light and angle of views.
To emphasize, one of our days will be spent producing many studies of the same outdoor composition for one full day - beginning with morning light and ending with the light of an autumn sunset. In addition, the same compositions will be explored through photography - as a tool to assist the artist, as well an art medium. Bring your own camera. Lighting techniques, camera exposure settings and framing compositions will be explored. A demonstration of artist rendering techniques in Adobe Photoshop will be presented. Library discussions of the masters will be enjoyed.

Develop strategies and techniques in locating birds in their natural habitat. Become familiar with
bird behavior and adaptations

Goals:  Students will learn:
how to select and use binoculars
how to identify birds in the field by sight and sound
bird behavior and adaptations
methods of studying birds in their natural habitat
references and resources for further study

Develop an understanding of the classification, diversity, and ecology of wildflowers. Learn techniques for collection and study.

Goals: Students will gain an understanding of:
the major groups and important families of flowering plants
basic terms for describing flowering plants
how to collect and preserve plants
identifying flowering plants using field guides and keys
approaches to further study, including helpful references

Get an overview of the ferns structure, life cycle and habitats. Learn how to identify ferns using fern guides and keys.

Goals:  Students will learn:
basic terms for describing fern structure
fern life cycle
where to look for and how to identify common ferns using field guides and keys
how to collect and preserve ferns

Amphibians and Reptiles
Learn how to locate amphibians and reptiles in their natural habitat, develop a sufficient familiarity their physical features to distinguish one from the other and identify common species.

Goals:  Students will learn:
habitat and basic life histories of both amphibians and reptiles
identifying physical characteristics
some species that occur locally
some aspects of reproductive behavior and diet
references and resources for further study

Aquatic Habitats
Develop an understanding of the importance of water quality and the properties of water that make aquatic habitats unique. Examine the habitats of both still and moving water and their characteristic plants and animals.

Goals:  Students will gain a basic understanding of:
Characteristics of water important to aquatic organisms
Habitats created by the still water of a pond and moving waters of a stream
Some of the animals and plants that inhabit area streams and ponds

Materials:   Seine, Dip nets; containers for holding/ observing live specimens, forceps, hand lens, microscope,

Insects
Give an overview of the diversity of insects, identify characteristics; discuss their role in the ecosystem, some of their adaptations and behavior. Learn methods of collection and study. 

Goals:  Students will learn:

Techniques in observing, collecting, preserving and identifying insects
Insect diversity, adaptations, life histories and ecological roles

Provide and overview of WV mammals, their diversity, classification, status, behavior and adaptations.
Develop skills in tracking and observing of mammals.

Terrestrial Habitats
Survey a range of terrestrial habitats in WV with emphasis on forestland followed by a field trip into
cultivated fields, old fields and woodland.

Goals:  Students will learn:
Some major types of terrestrial habitats in WV
characteristic flora and fauna
ecological processes that create and maintain various habitats
feature characteristics that make forestland the predominant habitat in WV and compare with other
terrestrial habitats such as open fields, pastures, etc.
